live love note writing: secession

In February we had a lovely evening of live poetry writing & reading, live music and live love note writing hosted by Secession Art & Design.

I had such fun talking with people and writing love notes - completely inspiring to see what folks did with the blank i love you cards.  To think there is a story behind each one! Don't miss "i love you like the salt loves the meat."  Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun. I hope more live love note writing sessions are in the future.

Silvi read from her book of poems, "sometimes we must swarm". And check out the amazing Jamie on the uke (ah! that voice!) and see Silvi's art on the wall.

What do you love? Friday

Welcome to "What do you love? Friday", the weekly prompt to document the love around us.

At times hope, at times a madlib, at times devotional, at times gratitude- this space is ours to explore the all the forms of love in life. The people, the places, the things – a capture of the now.

The process of inventorying the love around me helps me recognize love. Sometimes the list is long and sometimes just one moment or act. Regardless, each Friday I feel happier and like my heart has grown little bit bigger just by saying, "Hello, Love!" and typing it out.

Welcome, Love!

I love our birthday ritual - yarn tied to the bed of the birthday boy or girl, then strung around the house for the celebrant to follow until they find a gift at the end of the string. Today my youngest turns 10. We are all in the double digits now - a decade goes by so fast! I love that the GOAT, Greatest Of All Time as nicknamed by his older brother, will wake up delighted to scamper around the house to discover his birthday gift - so grateful for another year of young wonder.

It's Friday! Tell me, what do you love?

Welcome, Love!

I love life! The nitty, gritty, walking-down-the-sidewalk, living in the present, breathing in the city air, moments of life remind me I am alive and happy.

It's Friday. What do you love?

my love for you @ Oakland Art Murmur

Friday I packed up the love and headed over the bridge for Oakland Art Murmur. The first Friday of each month several blocks in the arts district of Oakland are closed to traffic. Galleries are open, food vendors and crafts on the street streets - plenty of good madness abounds. I thought the love might have a home among this crew.

I had so much fun hanging up love notes and chatting with people that I RAN OUT OF LOVE. This rarely happens. I'll have to return next month with more.

I was thrilled to see a quilted wall hanging with the koi fish stencils of Jeremy Novy, the street artist who taught me how to cut stencils.  Loved the eletrical box painted with "You are beautiful." The vintage refrigerator doors turned art, very nice!

Expect great things, you are enough, in all my life, everything will be okay, and love is <always> the answer now hang in Oakland. Oh, and the keys....a simple of opportunity. For you! I want the upside down key.

There was a little dancing in the street....
and bikes locked up on the fences.  As I was leaving Art Murmur for the next adventure I saw lots of i love you, too signs with all the tabs removed, a few customized, and at the 25th Street Collective someone had been super crafty and cut out a heart.

i love you: Glen Park

The Glen Park Festival brings a hub of activity to the Glen Park village - the perfect opportunity for interactive fence art.

This conceptual map was inspired fifteen years ago by an exhibit with a neighborhood diagram customized by visitors to the District Six Museum in Cape Town.  I'd mused about what it would be like for a community to map their favorite places and mark locations where they had had significant and mundane experiences - an attempt to capture the now of a neighborhood.  All these years later, I am lucky to be living in the phenomenal neighborhood Glen Park and tending the art fence, the perfect space for this idea that had been percolating for a decade and a half.

I sketched out a few significant streets and landmarks in Glen Park. My son added a compass rose and the necessary "you are here." A box of pens and several street maps were left on the sidewalk. The invitation: Take a pen and make your mark on this conceptual map of Glen Park. Add your street, your house, your favorite store or place you escape to. Tell us your Glen Park story - share the big and little memories that make this neighborhood our homes.

I learned great stories from my neighbors - there are secret caves in Glen Park Canyon, who knew?  The map depicts a haunted mansion, patches of fennel, the owl chicks, Tygers, Destination Bakery, many homes, where Kai learned to ride his bike, the rope swing, and the fog.  I did not know we had a fire breathing dragon or an elephant and such great artists!

Our kindergarten-age friend, newly adopted from Ethiopia, had spent the night.  I was not sure how much he understood about the festival, the big sleepover, or anything else for that matter.  He stayed close to me as I talked to passersby encouraging them to put their house or school or other important place on the map.  After observing several adults and children writing, he picked up a pen and gestured toward the map asking permission to draw.  I nodded yes explaining he could draw anything he wanted to.  He beamed as he drew and then turned around for approval - just beyond Glen Canyon he'd added Ethiopia. He'd understood precisely what was happening and now we know that somewhere just beyond Glen Park canyon is W's homeland.

Awesome, fun, amazing experience - thank you to all who participated!

Enjoy the slide show. Add your favorite Glen Park location or memory in the comments.

I love you, Glen Park!

Welcome, Love!

Today I love (and miss) New Orleans and my NOLA peeps. Thanks for the texts from the WWOZ tent, sending King Cakes in the mail, the alligator head for the boy's dresser and remembering the lunar holidays.

It's Friday. Tell me - What do you love?
